How many different ways can you spell Mackerel?
In its 2002 edition, The Oxford English Dictionary almost doubled the number of ancient mackerel spellings. Why? Blame the internet. After 1989 the internet made it easier for historians and antiquarians to scan, publish and exchange old documents. With a bigger database, all kinds of new/old spellings turned up. In fact, if you were slap every once-acceptable spelling onto its own tin can and...

A model for UX design reviews
The designer steps back and withdraws from the discussion. She should use body language to exclude herself to make it harder for the reviewers to address her. She should instead focus on her listening and note-taking. I think I’ll try this on for size sometime. I like. http://blog.davingranroth.com/2011/01/a-model-for-ux-design-reviews/

Onward & Upward
2010 was a fantastic year. So many great things happened involving so many good people. I launched my first public facing app, http://tweat.it in May with my friend Joel. In the same month, Crista and I debuted some of our ice cream flavors at the Brooklyn Lyceum Fair to a great public reception thereby kicking off what has turned into a new and exciting ice cream start up venture for both of us....

As of 5pm today our street still had not been effectively plowed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It’s a very heavily trafficked (and normally very wide street). This guy and others got stuck just coming to a stop and trying to go again.

Wheelmen & Co. Babylon Backpack
famlife: I am in love with the style and design of the Babylon bags from Wheelmen & Co. They have a vintage feel in both color and style, but fortunately they’re for commuters (like me). Outfitted with top grain leather accents and designed to ensure maximum comfort, I’m disappointed that these bags aren’t out yet!

Ext JS 4 Drawing and Charting
Until now, charting has been supported in Ext JS with externally developed plug-ins. Ext JS 4 will change that with the addition of not only native browser based charting, but full graphic based Draw Components. These new draw components normalize browser engine differences into a single comprehensive API, which is compatible across all of today’s browsers including IE 6.0+, Chrome, FireFox,...

Getting your users on-board
“The guys behind Friendfeed (now owned by Facebook) found that once a user connected to 5 or more people, they became active and logged in reguarly. Users who didn’t cross that threshold disappeared pretty quickly. Emergent metrics such as these are very useful for learning how to increase customer activity and loyalty.” Read entire post:...

Tumblr is just SO GOOD at having one place to read all your great content. The only problem is there are so many other sources for great content. This is a great example: http://www.tourdefork.net
